22-25 June 2019: UNPACED SHANGHAI:
2nd Congress on Ultradense Urbanism
After the 1" meeting celebrated in Dhaka in 2017, we are pleased to announce the Second Congress on Ultradense Urbanism to be held in Shanghai, China. This congress will congregate academics and professional all over the world for discussing the specific problems related to highly populated and ultradense urban environments. International experts will discuss with
Chinese academics about the differences between these environments in different contexts.
With more than 22 million people, Shanghai is the most populous city in China, and the second most populous city proper in the world. More than its density, which is especially interesting in the case of Shanghai is the accelerated pace at which this development has occurred. Re-emerging as a hub for international trade and finance after the economic reforms introduced by Deng Xiaoping, in the 1990s the city became the "showpiece" of the booming economy of mainland China.
The rapid transformations that Shanghai experimented in the last 30 years offer us the possibility to understand the processes able to trigger the urban development and to analyze the consequences connected to massive and fast growth. We will do this from five different perspectives:
i- People: Urban-rural migrations, social interactions and resiliency, urban psychopathologies, communities, empathy, the body and the city ...
ii- Urban Fabrics: Old-new tension, demolishing and replacement, preservation and memory, fabric collusion, the architecture and the city ...
iii- Public spaces and facilities: Public facilities and density, public necessities and quantification, public spaces and identity, scalability and growth, estimation failures ...
iv- Infrastructures: New infrastructures, infrastructural changes and challenges, functional conflicts, energy, water and waste management, the city as a machine ...
v- Policies: Top-bottom and bottom-up initiatives, formal-informal, laws and gaps, planning policies ...
Program Schedule:
