OFF-GRID TOILETS BOOK

OFF-GRID TOILETS BOOK

After two years working on sanitation problems in informal settlements, we compiled, analysed and compare 16 off-grid toilets implemented across the globe.

The sixteen systems analysed

This book was published thanks to the Spanish Agency of International Development Cooperation (AECID), and Agency of Spanish Government’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, the University of Liverpool and WaterAid Bangladesh.

The book consist in four chapters:

Chapter 1: Theoretical Aspects

This chapter provides an introduction to the multi-dimensional aspects related to safe sanitation worldwide. It wasn’t intended to provide a depth approach to each aspect but a perception of the connection between the different perspectives to better understand the complexity associated with this problem.

It includes contributions by Professor Adnan Morshed, Dr Md Khairul Islam, Ms Vanita Suneja and Mr Faysal Abbas, Dr Junjie Xi, Dr Tanzil Shafique and Dr Paco Mejias.

Chapter 2: Elements and Processes

This chapter explains the elements and processes involved in human waste disinfection, which take part in the selected off-grid toilets in this book. These explanations will help the reader to familiarise themselves with the terminology used in the description of the case studies.

Some page samples are below.

Chapter 3: Off-grid Toilet Systems

This chapter compiles sixteen off-grid sanitation systems which have been implemented worldwide. The systems are explained in a comprehensive manner through information provided directly by the developers of the systems. Despite the effort to clarify all steps involved in the selected systems, some information gaps are still noticeable due to the confidentiality related to some patent rights involved.

Same page samples can be found below:

Chapter 4: Comparative Classification

This chapter proposes a comparative classification of all the systems in relation to users and contextual conditions. The chapter starts with a taxonomy of the significant conditions for deciding what system to apply. An evaluation of the systems has been done to classify which system suits better under what conditions.
